Latest Thrift Store Trip: “More Vintage Christmas, Fancy Boots and Jeans”

DSC_0756

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ Poshmark

I was feeling a bit dejected as I circled around, not finding very much, and thinking that the store must have done a recent purge as a lot of areas seemed depleted.  I did pick up one grab bag with the Christmas Woody and Bullseye, the Hallmark Teddy Bear Elf and the Applause White Christmas reindeer.  And then I found two bags of vintage Christmas glass ball ornaments at $1.98 each.  And then the cute little vintage figurine of three choir boys from Japan at $2.98.

But after that, I was only left with jeans and shoes as all other areas weren’t offering any hidden surprises.  In jeans I picked up two pairs of Joe’s Jeans in the Honey style, a Hudson Woodstock, a gray J Brand Wink and a gray Gap Real Straight, a 7 For All Mankind Lexie Kaylie, Lucky Brand Sweet ‘N Straight, Level 99’s and a Miss Me Lace Pocket.  Jean prices ranged from $1.74-$5.24.

And in shoes, I found some boots. A pair of olive green suede VINCE boots, some Kenneth Cole Reaction No Turning Back boots in black, and Jeffrey Campbell Havana Last handmade leather Lita booties. Boots ranged from 99¢-$7.24.

Screen Shot 2017-04-25 at 12.24.18 PM Screen Shot 2017-04-25 at 12.23.02 PM

I spent a whopping $65.05 bringing my dollar cost averaging of twenty items to $3.25 per item.  Too much for some, a great price for others.  Potential gain $700.

Latest Thrift Store Trip: “Shiny Brite Ornaments, Karen Millen Boots & More Jeans”

DSC_0640

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ Poshmark

Finding nothing in toys but the vintage Operation game, I spotted bags of vintage boxed Shiny Brite ornaments on the endcaps.  Searching further, I picked up 10 packs of Mrs. Grossman’s stickers, two packs of vintage Christmas stickers, some vintage sewing patterns – the cutest being the toddler jumper/romper pack, and then the coolest tall vintage greeting cards.  Each bag was between 45¢-$1.98.  And in Housewares, only the Lenox mug and Midwest of Canon Falls Cast Iron Santa and Reindeer Stocking Hangers.

While searching through jeans, I spotted the Karen Millen boots on the opposite rack.  Looking them up, I saw that they retail in the $300 range and figured their $10 price tag might be worth it.

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

Another beautiful day to head across the bay to the thrift store.  In toys I immediately found a grab bag of both new and old Fisher Price Little people for $1.98  Also a bag of what look to be Russian dolls at $4.98, about a dollar a doll. And finally the American Girl Twin, in great condition, though she’s missing clothes, also $1.98.

Strolling by electronics, I picked up the awesome vintage Jack & Jill lamp by Nursery Plastics Inc., paying up at $7.48.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 3.02.45 PM

Nearby were the dresses and I thought I’d give them a bit of time.  I picked out a Tommy Bahama Olive and Cream Zebra Stripe Maxi Dress for $6.98 and a Bisou Bisou banded dress, new with tag, at $6.48 after 75% off. And then down the jean aisles I scooped up another pair of 7 For All Mankind Dojos, a Current Elliott skinny pair, J.Crew Toothpick Ankle in a lovely watermelon hue, Black Hudson Carly Straight, Antik Denim and a more vintage pair of AG Adriano Goldschmied The Angel.  I paid up a bit for some of the pairs, only because I know how quickly they sell.

Screen Shot 2017-03-14 at 3.07.54 PM

Okay, paying up this time at an $88 total, potential gain could be $650.

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

All excited once again, the inventory in the store did not quite meet my expectations.  Maybe I should start going on a different day.  I found nothing in grab bags, but as far as toys went, I picked up a Rodney Reindeer for 75¢, a 1977 Gund Bear, and then two Cabbage Patch Kids, half off, from behind the boutique counter at about $3 each.

Screen Shot 2017-03-08 at 7.38.30 AM Screen Shot 2017-03-08 at 7.40.03 AM Screen Shot 2017-03-08 at 7.48.01 AMScreen Shot 2017-03-08 at 7.49.06 AM

In jeans I found a pale pink CAbi pair, an older 7 For All Mankind Dojo, Aristocrat Windsor, Joe’s Jeans Fitzgerald, Gray True Religions, and a Gap Perfect Boot.  Each were under $5.

Latest Thrift Store Trip: “More Jeans, A Purring Lion & Vintage MLP”

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

I was really geared up for this.  The sun was shining and I had had about enough of rainy weather, no garage sales and limited thrift store trips.  It was time to add some new stock to the store.  Not that I found a ton, but at least I made a good effort.  In toys I only came across the vintage My Little Pony’s and a Dandee Cuddly Kingdom Purring Lion Cub.

Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 1.04.53 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 1.08.06 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 1.09.34 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 11.17.07 AM Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 11.19.26 AM

In more grab bags I found the Christmas ornaments, including a Hallmark Keepsake Meadow Snowman from 1997 and two Traditions ornaments from 1992 – a Jack In The Box Santa and a Squirrel on a Clothespin.  The bag for 99¢.

Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 11.20.26 AMScreen Shot 2017-02-28 at 1.15.08 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-28 at 1.15.38 PM

On to jeans, every size section seemed to hold a decent pair.  And all were under $3.  I found J Brand Skinny Leg, Paige Skyline, AG Adriano Goldschmied The Angel in Black, Hudson, 7 For All Mankind Dojo and A Pocket, and Lucky Brand Sant Tropez.

And in shoes I picked up a few pair for a few dollars.  Miss Bisou heels, Born Concept Laurina Sandals and Via Pinky Naylie Sandals.

Also in the mix was a nice yard of Braemore Fruit fabric, some heavy metal bells and a couple of pretty hand-painted ceramic boxes that I will needlessly add to my collection.  $37 spent, twenty items gathered for dollar cost averaging of under $2 per item and potential total gain of $600.

Latest Thrift Store Trip: “Petunia Pickle Bottom, Kimberly by Tomy & Vintage My Little Pony”

DSC_0722

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

Things go in cycles.  Sometimes the thrift store trip is great, sometimes not so much.  It also depends on how much money I’m willing to shell out, as well as how much time and effort on potential cleaning, or resurrecting. Right off the bat I found quite a few bags in toys. Basically every toy at the forefront of the photo there was found within the first ten minutes.  There was a bag of vintage-ish Barbies (meaning my era), a bag with a Kimberly by Tomy doll, a bag with a Milestone Porcelain Hawaiian Boy doll, a bag of rubber Polynesian dolls, a bag of vintage My Little Pony’s, two Fisher Price Lil Snoopy dogs – one from 1999 and one from 2005 and finally a few Fisher Price Little People in the mix.  Truth be told, those all cost me $24 which in hindsight seems a bit much.  We’ll see how I feel after I assess their current value:

Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 1.08.48 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 1.36.45 PM

Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 1.58.23 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 1.59.43 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 2.00.18 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 2.01.38 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 2.01.46 PM

Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 2.09.22 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 2.09.28 PM

And then in the background we see some handbags.  The first is a Vera Bradley Pink Petals Maggie, then a vintage-ish 75082 Fossil, then a Brighton Straw Woven Rainbow bag, and finally a Petunia Pickle Bottom Diaper Bag in more than decent shape.  I spent only $13 on the four, which seems better than I did on the toys for some reason.

Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 12.03.39 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 12.03.53 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 12.25.35 PM

So I spent $39.  Still working on a couple of evaluations, but potential gain could be $400.

Latest Thrift Store Trip: “Coach Bag, Fossil Boots & Fancy Nancy”

DSC_0581

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

I had a bit of time before lunch with a friend and decided to hit my favorite thrift store.  Still in the throes of trying to organize and minimize my vast inventory, I’ve retained a lower level of tolerance for anything that isn’t a great brand at a great price.  Thus the smaller take home load shown above.  Initially I found the Vera Bradley Island Blooms tote for $3, the Deux Lux bag in great shape for $7 and the Coach Legacy Straw Bag for $10.

Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.14.12 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.15.11 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.15.23 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.17.00 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.17.10 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.18.29 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.19.24 PM

On to jeans, I picked up 5 pairs for a total of $11.  They included Men’s Tommy Bahama, Hudsons, CAbi, MEK San Diego and 7 For All Mankind Edie.

Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 2.43.29 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 2.50.10 PM Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 2.54.46 PM

Then I spotted an awesome pair of boots, even more awesome that they are Fossil, and were only $5.

Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.29.56 PM

And finally, only the Fancy Nancy Fabulous Fashionista, missing a few pieces, for $2. Had she been new:

Screen Shot 2017-02-02 at 3.32.39 PM

Allrighty then.  For a mere $38, potential gain is $450.

North to Thrift for Christmas

dsc_0433

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

Considering that I am shipping out 10-15 packages a day, I’m a little overwhelmed.  And not necessarily interested in adding to my inventory at the moment, just more trying to clear out.  But, I had to be out of the house for the cleaning people and figured I would head north.  I hadn’t been up there in a awhile and hadn’t yet had the chance to check out the Christmas inventory.  I expected the dregs since I had called the store and knew that they had first stocked up the Monday before Thanksgiving.  It being almost two weeks after that I got there, I noticed that they were continuing to refill.  Being very picky, I found the following:  two very cute knee-hugger-like elves with candy sticks, a box of C&D Christmas ornaments, a Batman Uglydoll, a Bendy Santa, a Hallmark Santa Ornament, a Playdoh Clown Ornament, a Tasmanian Devil Ornament, a vintage Felt Dwarf Ornament, a bag of ornaments including three smaller Raggedy Ann Ball Ornaments, two Rodney Reindeers from the 70’s and a Rhonda from the 80’s, a huge bag of Playmobil, most from 1974, and a few other things I can’t decipher.  I would rattle off the prices, but it didn’t matter.  I was waiting in line at one register, and the lady who began to help me started ringing on another lady’s register.  So we had to move to another register.  At which time an older lady started talking to my cashier and asked if I was in line. I said we had come over from the other side. She said she only had one thing.  I moved over.  And waited again.  So when I finally checked out after a couple of mishaps, my cashier kind of glossed over almost everything, since she knew she was charging me $18 for the Playmobil bag.  Everything turned out to be about 25¢ each (besides the Playmobil) when they ranged from $1-$5 each.  I only spent around $23.  We’ll talk about the Playmobil, or Geobra, from 1974, later. For now, I found:

Without the Playmobil, $5 spent, potential $300 gain.

Hodge Podge Hospice Thrift Store Christmas Sale

dsc_0203

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

Apologies for the blinding sunshine streak in my photo that I can’t seem to get rid of.  What’s fun about this sale is that I can look back and see how I’ve done the past few years.  Really the first year I went I did the best.  And since then it has been a bit sparse yet not terrible.  And this year there were very few people there, perhaps because all of these Christmas sales are starting so much earlier than every before.  But I circled around, noticing that they didn’t have as much as they have had in the past.  I had heard the employees talking the week before about how they would “refill,” which ensures me that some of the good stuff was probably still in the back.  But I did alright.  I spent $68, feeling okay about that as it is a charity and I bought mostly the cheaper items.  The more expensive were the Dept. 56 Deer Head Candle Holders at $5 each and well worth it, though I had to carry those heavy suckers all around the store as the store’s new policy is not to hold anything at the counter.

screen-shot-2016-11-21-at-11-52-12-am

And to think one of the regulars actually put back a roll of Mrs. Grossman’s Christmas Stickers, much to my luck.  Two rolls of stickers and two packs of sticker tags at $1-$2 each.  I also found two Hallmark Snow Buddies (quite collectible), and many other Hallmark ornaments like the Thomas the Train, Dr. Seuss, 1980 tin Santa’s Flight Blimp, Santa and Mrs. Claus 1981, and a cool cuckoo clock ornament I’m keeping for myself.

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-8-42-09-am

And then there were the Pez Nurse & Doctor by Carlton Cards at $4 each which was probably a bit high, as well as the difficulty of finding a venue on which to sell them.

screen-shot-2016-11-19-at-8-27-13-am

Moving on, there were random vintage pieces like the wooden Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, the silk Santa in the airplane, the felt Santa head, the Kurt S. Adler wooden Minnie Mouse, and the Spode glass Rocking Horse.  In addition were the Alexander Henry Moose Lodge fabric and the Villeroy and Boch ceramic box.  At $68, and keeping several items for myself, I could make over $300.

Latest Thrift Store Trip: “Jeans, A Koosa & A Bear”

dsc_0066

Find My Finds: Amazon ~ Etsy ~ Bonanza ~ Ecrater ~ PoshmarkMissBargainHuntressShop

I had a very positive attitude heading out that day, expecting to find great things.  Only to initially find that they no longer had restrooms available which was a problem after my small journey and intended intent bargain hunt.  I asked my regular cashier and she said that they might be available next week as they were moving them to the back of the store.  Meanwhile, I tried to do a bit of shopping but ended up checking out and going to the Seafood City across the street.  Wow what a place that is.  Like a combination of a Hawaiian and Mexican mall with all Asian products.  There was a bakery, a Grill City, and things I’d never seen before.  I even popped into the actual supermarket area to find more products that have never made it over to my neck of the woods. Amazing, I thought.  Might have to take the family for a field trip to the Seafood City one day.

But I digress. So my first check out was only the few toy items found.  The Vermont Teddy Bear from 1994, the Cabbage Patch Koosa from 1993, The vintage Walt Disney Productions Donald Duck Puppet that squeaks, the Disney Bullseye Horse and what I think is a Holly Hobbie doll, all for $8.

screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-09-28-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-28-21-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-28-34-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-29-06-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-29-14-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-29-58-pm

When I came back, I did my usual rounds.  As you can see, I hit it big in the jeans rack.  Three pairs of Citizens for Humanity, two pairs of Rock & Republic, two pairs of CAbi, one pair of Gap Sexy Boot and even a 7 For All Mankind Denim Short.  None were over $3.

screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-11-02-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-31-29-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-31-12-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-32-44-pm screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-32-15-pm

In other clothing I picked up the Jack Wills sweater, the Real Madrid Adidas Jacket, the very pretty ruffle infinity scarf and lastly a beautiful piece of upholstery fabric (for 45¢).  Total on that portion of the day was $36.

screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-2-34-36-pm

Total of $44 spent.  Potential gain of $520.  Maybe the mojo is coming back…
